Broadening our perspectives of loss and grief

Children and young people's experiences of loss and grief can often be overlooked. It can also be challenging to explore loss and grief when associated with experiences of trauma. This learning program explores these concepts to promote a deeper understanding of, and capacity to respond to, children's unique experiences and stories. Theoretical constructs such as disenfranchised grief and chronic sorrow will be explored and then applied to specific ways of working connected to your current practice.

Description

The focus of the program is on applying theory into practice so we will have opportunities for discussion and application to current practice challenges and issues, as well as sharing successes and next steps.

By the end of this program, it is expected that you will be able to:

  • Articulate the concepts of loss, grief and trauma within a developmental context
  • Examine the behavioural and emotional manifestations of loss and grief in children who may have also experienced trauma
  • Integrate cultural humility, family context and collaborative approaches into all responses to children's unique experiences
  • Develop creative approaches to support children in the context of your own role and practice sphere
  • Ensure your own wellbeing in this challenging aspect of practice.

This learning program reviews our understanding of trauma and its impacts but also reflects on what this means for our practice. This program both reinforces previous learning and adds to our toolkit.
